Let's Celebrate the Holidays by Sharing Our Daily Bread

Bethel United Methodist Church of Jonesville has the distinction of being the very first church to join MEOC’s  “Sharing our Daily Bread” fundraising initiative for Home Delivered Meals.  Bethel Church became part of this initiative in 2001, by contributing $600 in honor of church member, Tiny Rines, pictured here.  Mrs. Rines, who is now approaching 95 years of age, has been an active member of MEOC’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program for many years, taking a special interest in donating clothing and special gifts for babies and children in the MEOC Healthy Families Program.  Here Tiny is pictured in one the many old fashioned bonnets that she used to make for herself and for her many friends.

It’s time once again to kick off the Holiday Campaign for “Sharing Our Daily Bread.”   We invite every reader of the Mountain Empire News to support this giving partnership by continuing with your personal giving plan or by becoming a first time contributor.

For MEOC and other Area Agencies on Aging across the Commonwealth, the service of Home Delivered Meals remains in a funding crisis.  The need for this important service exceeds available funds year after year. With increased gas prices, the cost of providing Home Delivered Meals has increased, making it even more difficult to meet this ever-increasing need.  As a result, MEOC currently has more than 150 older citizens from Lee, Scott and Wise Counties and the City of Norton on waiting lists for service and new requests for this service come in almost daily.

MEOC’s “Sharing our Daily Bread” initiative and other fundraising activities produce about forty thousand dollars a year.  The long-range goal is to raise enough money to eliminate waiting lists and to ensure that every older citizen who needs a meal, gets a meal.  As we approach the upcoming HOLIDAY season, please consider giving a gift that keeps giving throughout the year—the gift of Home Delivered Meals.

If you would like 8 ˝  by 11 inch copies of the “Sharing our Daily Bread” flyer featured on this page to share in your community or if you would like more information about joining the “Sharing our Daily Bread” partnership, call MEOC at 276-523-4202 and ask for Nancy or Debbie.
