Welcome to the Mountain Laurel Center's Community Resources and Events page, your source for information on the cancer-related resources available in Southwest Virginia and the surrounding region. Here you can find information on where to go to find information about cancer and cancer-related issues, cancer screenings and related services, local cancer support groups, and other cancer-related services and events in our community.

Medical Care

Mountain View Regional Medical Center - Mountain View Regional Medical Center's OB/GYN Department participates in the American Cancer Society's Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. This program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings to women who meet the following criteria: 1) are legal residents of the U.S., 2) live in Virginia, 3) have income equivalent to 200% of the federal poverty level or less, 4) have no insurance at all, and 5) are 50 years old or older. Bristol Regional Medical Center - Located in nearby Bristol, TN, Bristol Regional Medical Center is a Wellmont Health System facility. Bristol Regional's cancer care program includes palliative services, prostate brachytherapy, participation in a cancer advisory committee, education and support, and participation in the cancer registry. Holston Valley Medical Center - Located in Kingsport, TN, Holston Valley Medical Center is a Wellmont Health System medical facility. Holston Valley is home to the Christine LaGuardia Phillips Cancer Center, which offers cancer care services including prostate brachytherapy, participation in the cancer advisory committee, cancer education and support, and participation in the cancer registry. Johnson City Medical Center - A not-for-profit teaching hospital, affiliated with East Tennesee State University's James H. Quillen College of Medicine, located in Johnson City, TN. JCMC is home to the ETSU Cancer Center, which works to combine all aspects of detection, treatment and research for the benefit of cancer patients. ETSU Cancer Center is a member of the Eastern Oncology Cooperative Group, one of the largest clinical trials programs in the country. All clinical trials under way at the ETSU Cancer Center are funded by the National Cancer Institute. Southwest Virginia Regional Cancer Center - Providing quality cancer care to the people of Southwest Virginia, Southwest Virginia Regional Cancer Center offers chemotherapy, radiation therapy, laboratory services, gynecological oncology consultation, continuing medical education, and access to new therapies being researched at major cancer centers. SWVA Regional Cancer Center also provides free cervical cancer screenings in April, skin cancer screenings in May, and prostate cancer screenings in September. Information Sources

Body Talk - A non-profit consumer health information service provided by the University of Virginia Health System. Body Talk allows you to call or email a health question to a Body Talk volunteer, who will research your topic and mail a packet of information to you within 3 business days. Although headquartered in Virginia, Body Talk is available to anyone in the United States. Body Talk is available toll-free at 877.809.9010 or by email at bodytalk@virginia.edu.

The Lonesome Pine Regional Library System - The Lonesome Pine Regional Library System contains a variety of current books, periodicals, and other print resources related to cancer and wellness. In addition, library patrons may access Internet resources such as FindItVA.com (which can also be accessed from home using your library card number), ProQuest periodicals search, or Encarta Encyclopedia (which contains information about cancer and provides links to various cancer websites). The University of Virginia Health Sciences Library - UVA's Health Sciences Library offers a wealth of health information resources and services. Southwest Virginia's local Outreach Librarian is Ann Duesing at UVA-Wise. Services and Assistance

The Advocate Center - The advocate center offers limited financial assistance for prescription drugs to residents of Wise County and the City of Norton. For more information, phone the Advocate Center at 679.0967.

Child Care Connect - A community-based resource and referral center. Child Care Connect provides Southwest Virginia families with factual information about child day care centers and home-based child care in their area. For more information, or to request information about child care services, call 877.CCC.KIDS.

Client Centered Legal Services - A non-profit organization that provides free legal advice and representation to low-income people in Southwest Virginia. For more information, contact CCLS at 800.234.2257.

Cumberland Plateau Health District - Health Departments in Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, and Tazewell counties offer free breast and cervical cancer screening services to low-income women through Every Woman's Life (part of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program). Pap smear clinics for women of all ages are also available for a sliding-scale-based fee. Department of Social Services - The Department of Social Services can assist in obtaining child care, Medicaid, Medicare, and other financial and social services that will help provide health care and assistance in living with a diagnosis of cancer. Lenowisco Health District - Health Departments in Lee, Wise, and Scott Counties provide free screenings for breast and cervical cancer, by appointment. For more information, or to schedule a screening, contact Heather Horne at 276.386.1312 or 276.328.8000.

Look Good, Feel Better - A national program, sponsored by the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance association, dedicated to helping women undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments feel better about themselves. Mount Rogers Health District - Health Departments in Bland, Carroll, Grayson, Smyth, Washington, and Wythe counties participate in the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection, and provide mobile mammography services to residents of those counties. Mountain Empire Older Citizens - An area agency on aging and public transit provider, MEOC is the non-profit parent organization that houses the Mountain Laurel Center. MEOC provides services, support, information, and programs that assist older persons and their families. In addition, MEOC offers several support services to disadvantaged or differently abled persons of all ages and their families, including the Pharmacy Connect program, which provides free or reduced-cost prescription medications for people of all ages who cannot afford to pay for prescriptions. MEOC is also the public transportation provider for Lee, Wise, and Scott Counties, and the City of Norton. Pharmacy Connect - Pharmacy Connect is a Virginia state program that offers assistance obtaining prescription drugs at reduced or no cost. The following agencies in Southwest Virginia currently host Pharmacy Connect programs:

Support Groups

Caring Hearts Women's Support Group - A cancer support group for the women of Southwest Virginia, founded by local resident Mary Turner. Caring Hearts meets at 6.30 PM on the 2nd Monday of each month in the Baptist Student Union at The University of Virginia's College at Wise.
